That Robert Recorde invented the equals sign is quite commonly known in Wales. However there is a rich history of mathematics and mathematicians beyond Recorde. Twelve mathematicians are shown here and thanks are due to Emeritus Professor Gareth Ffowc Roberts for providing them. He has written a book, Cyfri’n Cewri, about them which will soon appear in an English version too. Our hope is that this will allow us all to learn about the work of Wales’s distinguished mathematicians, which in turn will inspire a new generation of mathematicians.
Professor Roberts had previously written Count Us In which explores processes of mathematics from a cultural perspective and contains many interesting insights into Mathematics in Wales.
