About Us

The Further Mathematics Support Programme Wales (FMSPW) is a Welsh Government funded initiative. It is managed by the Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (WIMCS), a collaborative partnership of the Universities of Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, South Wales and Swansea, and is supported by Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI). The Programme started in 2010 within South West Wales and covered the counties of Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea. In 2013 two more areas were added. The FMSPW now operates in all counties/regions of Wales.

The aims of the FMSPW are to:

  • raise awareness among students and their parents of the value of studying Mathematics at higher levels
  • increase the number of students in Wales studying AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics
  • increase the number of schools and colleges in Wales offering Further Mathematics
  • increase the number of students from Wales applying to study higher education courses in Mathematics and Mathematically-rich subjects such as Engineering, Physics, IT, Finance and Economics
  • improve the transition of students from further to higher education courses in Mathematics or courses which have a significant element of Mathematics thus benefiting the wider economy

Our main aim is to provide Further Mathematics GCE AS/A2 level tuition for all English and Welsh awarding bodies to students who cannot access Further Mathematics through their local 11-18 schools or colleges. Schools and colleges are welcome to get in touch about online Further Mathematics tuition.

All schools and colleges in Wales are invited to register with the FMSPW to obtain free single user teacher access to the Integral Further Maths resources offered by MEI, which cover five Further Mathematics specifications (AQA, Edexcel, MEI, OCR and WJEC). The resources also include materials to support the teaching and learning of Mathematics within the Level 3 Engineering Diploma, Additional Mathematics Level 2 cerificate and STEP and AEA.

All state-funded schools in Wales are welcome to attend our events which are free and normally held in Bangor, Cardiff, Swansea and Haverfordwest.

Schools and colleges may also subscribe to online student access to GCSE, Additional Maths, A-level Maths and Further Maths resources. The annual subscription costs £285 per 10 student logins. Additional student logins can be purchased at a reduced cost. This includes the students’ record system for teachers, students’ online tasks and progress tracking system as well as Core A-level Mathematics resources for teachers.
