🎄The Open University, School of Mathematics and Statistics, Sixth Form Christmas Talk

This is an annual mathematics talk for sixth form students organised by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the Open University which this year will be held on Tuesday, 5th December 2023. This will be an online interactive session aimed at Year 12 and 13 students who are studying mathematics. The theme of this year’s talk will be the exciting new world of data science and the talk will be delivered by Dr Sophie Carr, a Data Scientist, Engineer, and “World’s Most Interesting Mathematician”. Sophie is the Vice President for education and statistical literacy at the Royal Statistical Society and also the founder and director of Bays Consulting.  Her talk will be entitled:
“Deck the hall with bows of data – tis the season to be (statistically speaking) jolly!”
Full details included below. The event will take place online using Zoom, and we invite teachers to register their classes to participate. The event will run twice on the day, first at 10:00-11:00 and then repeated at13:45-14:45. You can register your class to participate in either of these sessions here: https://forms.office.com/e/narZVzRtit
Registration will be open until Friday 24/11/23. We hope that this year’s talk will be of interest to you and your students and hope that you are able to join us. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch. stem-ms-outreach@open.ac.uk   Deck the hall with bows of data – tis the season to be (statistically speaking) jolly!
How can data science and statistics remove the stress and worry from Christmas? In this interactive workshop, we’ll jingle all the way through the data to find the hidden patterns and trends that help spread the Christmas cheer whilst creating calm for all.  So why not join us for a merry excursion into the world of data science to see how you can embrace your inner mathematician and optimise your festive season.   About our speaker: Dr Sophie Carr is the founder and director of Bays Consulting. Sophie’s first love was Lego, then aeroplanes and her career followed suit. She trained as an engineer and whilst working full time took a PhD in Bayesian Belief Networks and has worked in data analytics ever since. Or to put it another way, Sophie has made a living out of finding patterns. Outside of work, Sophie is the Vice President for education and statistical literacy at the Royal Statistical Society and the World’s Most Interesting Mathematician.
